Day tour to Assisi the city where St Francis, patron saint of Italy, and St Clare lived and died.
In the morning pick up at 8 am at your hotel/apartment and transfer to Assisi. First stop to the St Francis Basilica. Listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, it is the most sacred place in Assisi, since it is here that the remains of the famous Saint are kept and guarded. According to tradition, Francis himself, on the verge of death, told his companions that this was the place for his burial.
Your tour conitnue with the visit to St Chiara Basilica. The church was built after the death of St Clare between 1257 and 1265 and her remains were moved in 1260. The crypt, which now houses the saint’s tomb, was not built until 1850.
The architectural style is Gothic and very similar to the Upper Basilica of St Francis of Assisi.
Free time for the lunch, in case you wish we can book a nice trattoria/restaurant (lunch is not included in the tour cost).
On the way to return stop to St Maria degli Angeli Basilica where the Porziuncola is located. This is the chapel where Francis of Assisi used to pray and is therefore the centre of Franciscan spirituality. Transfer back to Rome.
